The badge says SS V. It had a gnarly-sounding exhaust.

I mean isn’t just a Chevy SS with aftermarket smoked LED taillights?
I’m not sure if this applies to Chevy, but wikipedia says the following about the Commodore SS V:
The mid-range SS V features include larger 19-inch wheels and front fog lights (in addition to LED DRLs). Inside the SS V gains leather seats, an enhanced instrument display,8 way electric driver’s seat
satellite navigation
system and a
DVD player
(DVD dropped from MY 2015).

No it’s not. It’s RWD and a descendant of the Pontiac G8 GXP. 4 15 HP of 6.2 liter V8 power with manual trans available.

No, it’s RWD. It’s a newer Pontiac G8, essentially.

Thanks for clarifying. I was under the assumption that the G8 was a Police Caprice. This would have been an expensive car.
So the Police Caprice is no more? Short-lived.

All of the G8, Caprice and SS were built in Australia. That plant shut down about 2-3 years ago.
G8 and SS were about the same size, though I *think* the SS was on an updated platform.
The Caprice was longer and available with several engines - biggest of which was the LS3 in the SS.
The SS was around $49k and loooved by enthusiasts, but Chevy never tried all that hard to market it. They’ve held their value very well (as have the V8 powered G8s)

Mechanicals are basic GM LS stuff. Very easy.
Body parts less so but I’m not aware of issues.

Ordinarily it looks like this
because it is essentially Australia’s vastly cooler RWD V8 Malibu, but it was sold in the US briefly alongside its retiree focused cousin . Malibus look like this

A lot of people moaned but I’m pretty sure they lost money on every car and never wanted it to be high volume. They only came here because of an agreement with the Aussie government that they would export X number of cars.

...no, the Chevy SS is a commodore, which in that gen (VF)
was RWD
In Aus the trims were
SS - cloth interior and V8 (either L77 or LS3 depending on year)
SSV - bigger wheels,
leather interior and factory foglights, better satnav / infotainment etc
SSV Redline - same interior as SSV but with torque vectoring and suspension and brake
upgrades. Launch control and some other stuff.

the Commodore is bigger than the Malibu, not really the same other than styling cues and being a sedan.

https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/industry/end-car-production-australia-what-went-wrong
A major problem is that writing was on the wall before the SS was ever sold. Part is rumored to try and spread the R&D budget,
“ Though the bailout of GM spelled the end of Pontiac and the G8, there were far greater headwinds facing Australian Commodore exports to the US than mere branding issues. As the graph above makes perfectly clear, the major difference between the G8-era exports and the post-bailout exports of Caprice PPV and SS variants of the Commodore has to do with currency. Currency issues hurt earlier Holden exports, but the dramatic drop in the US dollar relative to the Australian dollar since the financial crisis has doomed any hope that Holdens might make money in the US. Ironically that fall in the value of the US dollar has helped GM –and the US auto industry more broadly– recover rapidly. It’s simply done so at the expense of the traditional outposts of the US auto industry: Australia and Canada.”

Then you get into a number of labor agreements in Au, between holden, workers, and the AU gov starting in 2009 . GM had to export at least a certain amount from Au.

One thing i think nobody mentioned is that the SS came with a 6-speed manual in the U.S. (though obviously an auto was sold as well)
Also one year it came in this very pretty green color which i like a lot.
